Storm Damage

We followed the advice to stay at home as Storm Eunice passed over this afternoon.  It was very blustery, but I think we are fairly well protected as we suffered minimal damage (one trellis removed from our fence, one plant pot blown over, one half a roof tile on the ground and a broken branch on our ancient cherry tree). We similarly escaped serious issues during the great storm of 1987.  I shall have a proper look tomorrow to see if there is anything else.

Late in the afternoon, when the worst of the storm had passed, we went out for a walk to see if there was any other signs of damage in the neighbourhood. Apart from the scattered wheely bins, there were many broken branches on the ground, and a couple of toppled trees.  One of these was in someone's front garden:  the tree had toppled sideways on to their driveway, narrowly missing their car, but totally blocking it in.

When we got up to the High Street, the lack of traffic immediately indicated something more major.  The road had been closed because the scaffolding from a major building extension had been badly damaged and was in danger of falling across the road.  This is a 3 storey block of flats which is having another storey added on top.  The remaining tarpaulins on the roof top disguised the extent of the damage, but it looked to me like most of the scaffolding will have to be removed and then rebuilt.  That will cause a noticeable delay (and add some cost) to the extension.
