A flavour of ...

'A year in Normandie' by David Hockney currently on display in Gallery 4 of Salts Mill.

Chris wasn't going out today so I suggested we walk from Saltaire. A favourite walk in lockdown restrictions with my friend as there was a choice of coffee stops, but not done recently.

We walked along the Leeds Liverpool canal to Hirst Wood where there are the most magnificent trees and yet more bluebells. (Ancient woodlands as apparently there is evidence of the charcoal industry dating back to 1290 and even a possible iron age settlement!)
Back onto the canal where I saw my first Cow Parsley of the season. From there we dropped down to the River Aire where there were some great river reflections as well as lots of blooming Ramsons - wild garlic - which smelled quite pungent. Walk in the extra with some of those wild flowers for FF.

In Roberts Park we stopped for coffee at the Half Moon cafe sitting outside overlooking the Mill and cricket ground which was being prepared no doubt for weekend play. It was remarkably quiet.

Then on to Salts Mill and up to the fourth floor gallery where the specially prepared top floor room is now housing David Hockney's 'A year in Normandie'.
It is a 90.75 metre frieze, on the lines of the Bayeax Tapestry, created as 220 iPad pieces done during lockdown in 2020. They were painted in his garden in Normandy and illustrate the changing seasons. My blip is a collage showing just a bit of each season and the whole of one side looking back to the start from summer. The winter picture gives an idea of some of the detail shown especially on the trees. At the right hand side there are panels showing spring, summer and autumn.

This is just a flavour of the whole thing so I've made a Flickr album for anyone interested (Nanna K!) here.

We walked back down through the mill revisiting the Floor 3 Gallery still displaying 'The Arrival of Spring' also done by Hockney in Woldgate, nr Bridlington, E Yorkshire. ipad pictures again, One done each day from Jan 1 to May 31 2011.

Finally a visit to the book floor where, yes, a purchase was made. How could you not!

A most enjoyable walk and morning even though it was less bright than yesterday.

Happy weekend everyone!
