Day 10 Tour of the Lakes

The plan was to walk up Wetherlam and Swirl How, come down to Elterwater and catch the bus to Ambleside YHA for the night. But Elizabeth and I wanted an easier day, so we branched off to the right as the others went to the left and ambled gently and enjoyably down the valley.

I peeped into Tilberthwaite Quarry and had a quick chat to a group of climbers and we explored a ravine that was presumably an old quarry. We enjoyed the masses of orchids, and explored Andy Goldsworthy's circles in the sheepfold walls, also at Tilberthwaite.

On the path down to Elterwater we came across a farmhouse selling homemade cakes, so of course we were tempted and enjoyed one each with a cuppa... then bought another to eat tomorrow! There were several chickens on the track, one with chicks, and so we fed them cake crumbs. The hens seemed to be rare breeds - see extras - one was very beautiful.

The bus was caught and we went straight through to the hostel.

I've had enough walking for now, tomorrow I'll let them climb yet another mountain, but I'm catching the bus to Patterdale  :-)
