Salute to the Sockeye - Adams River

To return from the
ocean is the hope of each
red sockeye salmon

My brother and I dawdled over coffee this morning, took our sweet time over a late breakfast and left after 1 PM for Shuswap Lake to see something of this year's salmon run.

We deliberately left it to the afternoon so we could avoid all the school groups who are there each school day to experience something of the salmon run for the year. This year, every fourth year, is supposed to be a big run for numbers. Our Department of Fisheries offers educational opportunities for those who are interested. Our local First Nations have provided cultural information as well.

We walked along the forest paths to get to the spawning grounds. It is a little early to see much along the creeks and the river. We heard that the DoF was holding back the salmon in Shuswap Lake because the river and the creeks were really too warm at the moment. We decided against plodding across a wide expanse of river stones. Neither of us are too good on our feet. We turned back to the display area and enjoyed the walk, the pathways and the sunshine. We were encouraged to return on Thanksgiving weekend (next weekend) when many salmon would be on the river and creeks.

My brother and I headed home for a dinner I'd set out in my slow cooker. We had a lovely afternoon together.

We enjoyed a high of 24 C in the sunshine today. The forecast is for this warm, sunny trend to continue.
