The Woodland Garden (Wednesday 8th March 2023)

The predicted snow duly arrived overnight. I had thought we might escape with a light fall quickly turning to sleet and rain but when I looked outside in the early morning I saw quite a substantial covering. As I was looking a sparrowhawk flew in and landed on a snow-covered branch. It looked as if it had settled there but when I came back with a camera it had gone.

By the time I got up an hour later and took these pictures the snow was already beginning to disappear. Although the shade temperature was around two and a half degrees there had clearly been a freeze overnight and there were clumps of ice on the acers and signs of ice in the bird bowl (see Extras).

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Miles Davis - Milestones (1958)
Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (stand-up bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums)
This piece was recently broadcast by Iggy Pop in an archive edition of his Confidential show (BBC Radio 6). It was well known to me not only from the album Milestones (the track was originally titled Miles) but also as the theme tune to a BBC TV programme. It turns out I had been trying to identify which one online since the question first came up in 2020. Initial thoughts were for Late Night Line Up or Tomorrow's World  but these have been ruled out.
