Tea at Harry’s.

If you’ve lived in Yorkshire for a good many years you’ll know exactly where I’m talking about.

The Wetherby Whaler at White Cross, Guiseley was originally Harry Ramsden’s. We often stopped for fish and chips when I was a child if we were coming past from one of our Sunday trips out. There was always a queue for the restaurant but we never joined it, far too posh for us, we’d get a take away and perhaps eat them in the little covered alley alongside the restaurant. Next to that was the wooden hut which was the original fish and chip shop on the site. That now is gone and despite franchises around the world Harry’s is no more, but the sumptuous interior is still there and now we do eat inside.

We went tonight as we were going to the cinema in Ilkley, rare for us to go to an evening performance and the reason why I’m posting so late.
We went to see the  much acclaimed  ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’.
Very powerful. The titles at then end rolled without any music or pictures and everyone in the auditorium left in silence.  I think that pretty much said it all.
