A view from Jeanneb

Glorious Good Friday

Fabulous blue skies from the off this morning so I suggested a walk along Goit Stock first thing  as I knew the Wood Anemones would be flowering and may have gone over when we get back from our visit to our Bath family next week.

Yes they were there but as it was relatively early (9.00 am) the sun hadn’t opened many of them but they still looked lovely edging the water of Harden Beck.

Always looking out for Dippers a movement caught my eye but it was a pair of Grey Wagtails ( never understand that name as they are largely yellow) which were equally nice to see.

We walked back to the village via Leech Lane. The Blackthorn is just coming into flower so another visit soon would be good.

Saw son Alex for a brief chat in his garden and then home for coffee.

The extras show what Good Friday is about at our two village churches and I was amused by the sign at the butchers. It makes business sense for him to open Good Friday when he will be making lots of sales for the Easter weekend but the closed Tuesday is quite a thing in this area of Yorkshire or certainly was in the past.
I can remember as a child thinking it was odd places didn’t close here on Good Friday but I think it was to do with the many mills. They didn’t want to shut down the boilers/machines for one day, turn them on again and then off for the Monday holiday. Having Monday and Tuesday as holidays made more practical sense. The idea of ‘Easter Tuesday’ still hangs on here but is less common now.

(Chris was caught out by the village pharmacy being closed today, it hadn’t occurred to him it would be, doesn’t help that they don’t open Saturday either!)

Have a good holiday weekend everybody.
