If you can't beat them...

Cumbria Wildlife Trust Cold Springs Reserve.

I mentioned a couple of days ago being at a steering committee meeting for the new Cold Springs Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Penrith.  In fact at the speed Penrith is expanding it will soon be in Penrith.

Today while I was visiting Kanyl we nipped up onto Beacon Edge to view the land gifted for the reserve and to discuss his ideas about disabled access.

The blip shows the north westerly end of the reserve.  The wood down by the houses isn't part of the reserve but the land uphill is.  Currently, the reserve is a number of fields with the remains of hedges.  Where the hedges were will become scrubland, 1200 "whips" (small single stem trees) of scrub native species have already been planted.  There will be a community orchard,  In the corner beside the wood is Cold Springs Care Home and there will be a sensory garden near there.  The grassland will be wildflower meadow in spring and then short grass for the Waxcap Fungi which already grow on the site.
