PINK DAY 23 - THE LAST DIANTHUS

I wanted to go out into the garden, not only to find something PINK to fit in with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Challenge, but also to take the advice of a fellow blipper and use my new camera.

Sadly there aren't that many flowers left and those that are still blooming have been battered by the heavy rain last night and the wind this morning. However, this little dianthus was there, although a little bedraggled, and it was PINK - and I believe it may be called "Gran's Favourite"! The common name for dianthus is carnation or sometimes they are called "pinks".

It brought back memories of Mr. HCB's father, who used to grow them in his greenhouse and tended them lovingly. He was so proud of them and had created a new dianthus which was just coming into flower, but sadly he died suddenly whilst on holiday, so never saw his new creation but it was put into the coffin with him.

I also remember that our younger son arrived at the house on the day of his grandmother's funeral, many years later, sporting a beautiful carnation in his buttonhole. He did get some strange looks, because of course, it's not usual to wear a flower for a funeral, but as he said "This is for my Nan!" He always was a "one off"!

Amazing once again, how something can evoke so many memories - just like yesterday. I wonder what brings back memories for you - a sight, a sound, a smell - whatever it is, I hope that the memories are good ones.

Off to play dominoes with our friend, Elizabeth, once Mr. HCB comes from from Lunch Club, where he helps every Wednesday.
