Marjorie's ramblings

Allen Banks

I finally dragged myself out for a walk today, but the best light had already gone. (Note to self - set out at 0930 in the morning.) Allen Banks was almost deserted at 1pm as I pottered along the river side. Nearly all the deciduous trees are without leaves now, so there is a thick, slippery, gooey layer on sections of the path. Then there was mud - very clarty - and I know I am properly back home. Gaiters to wash and boots to clean and polish.

Gradually I met more people, mainly dog walkers. Everyone was enjoying a fine day. There were the young men in unsuitable shoes; the woman balancing a bridge camera on a tiny tripod; the man with 2 whippets - 4 years old, from the same litter and clearly cannot bear to be parted; the family all kitted out in boots and with rucksacks. It's lovely how people are happy to exchange a few words as they go.

Here is the plaque which gives the most important information about Allen Banks. Francis Boyes-Lyon was the Queen Mother's uncle and there are strong family connections with this area. Ridley Hall, now a boarding house for Haydon Bridge High School, was owned by the Bowes-Lyon family. I like the idea that we can all enjoy the area, which we can do, thanks to the National Trust.

In the distance you can see one of the bridges that was destroyed in the floods earlier this year. You now have to walk all the way to Plankey Mill before you can cross the river.
