What Did Thomas Do?

My mum and I had another lovely day out in Cambridge today. After dropping the Little Misses off at school we carried on to The Orchard Tea Garden at Granchester for a cup of tea. It's so beautiful there even on a soggy November morning.
We tried to go for a walk along the river but got caught in a shower so dashed to the church instead and had a lovely half hour looking inside the wonderful building and the atmospheric graveyard.
There was a moving display about men from Grantchester who died in both wars, including Rupert Brooke. Rather than just the usual names and dates there were photos and lots of information about their early lives in Grantchester along with details about how they died and where they're buried.
It's unimaginable - to go from that peaceful idyllic village to the horrors of war.
Also in the church was this list of Vicars which Mum and I noticed last time. We couldn't help but wonder what on earth Thomas Whatton did to be ejected.
And why Isaac Dobson had a twelve year stint as Acting Vicar before getting the job!
A quick Google and I've found details on Thomas Whatton. He sounds like a proper wrong 'un!
He lacked pastoral zeal and moral earnestness apparently! He argued with parishioners and harassed them for money; he got arrested inside the church; he admitted charges of drunkenness and gross indecency and ended up fleeing from Grantchester.
Imagine how bad he must have been to actually eject him!! Just brilliant!!!
From Grantchester we got the park and ride into Cambridge and had a great day shopping, finding places to eat on our next twenty visits!, wandering round, stopping for tea and generally having a lovely time.
I love this time of year when all the Christmas stuff is coming out and it's all starting to look pretty and exciting!!
I went into the jewellers who made my engagement and wedding rings. I need to get them re-sized and had planned to drop them off. Weirdly I couldn't bring myself to leave them! Next time!!
