A visit to Garmisch

Today was a free day and a few of us took the train into Germany to the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We saw the stadium for Winter Olympics and then walked uphill to the Partnach Gorge.

This is a natural gorge and used to be used for logging. Now vast volumes of water tumble and fight their way down, with hydroelectric power being generated as a result.

There is a well organised tourist trail alongside the water. The spray from above makes it advisable to wear waterproofs.

It is very difficult to photograph. Try to imagine this gorge stretching over 700 metres. Try to imagine the deafening sound of the water.

It was well worth a visit.

Tonight we all went out for a meal in a local Bavarian restaurant. The food was good but the service slow. We were given an outside table and it became very chilly.

Back at the hotel and I saw the end of the Murray v Tsonga match. Earlier I saw the end of Federer's win over Chilic. Amazing tennis.

Tomorrow we travel home. Bowlby managed to catch a bat inside our house last night. Our local bat expert had been twice to try to locate it after it set off the burglar alarm. I'm afraid it is no more.... On a happier note, Mum is recovering from her chest infection.
