U-Bahn München: 74/100 Ostbahnhof

Munich underground: 74/100 Ostbahnhof

It has been quite some time since my last entry in my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series. Today's station has been refurbished for the better part of the last 12 month. It is actually still a construction site, but I found a way to hide the building works: behind a moving underground train.

Ostbahnhof underground station (Munich East) was opened in Oktober 1988 together with the U5 connector from Odeonsplatz through Lehel, Max-Weber-Platz, and Ostbahnhof, to Innsbrucker Ring. At Ostbahnhof you can change between underground, tram, and suburban train networks; Ostbahnhof is also an important stop for long-distance train to the east and south. Corresponding to its importance for the whole public transport network, the single island platform is wider than usual to accomodate a high number of riders. To further stress the significance of the station it has a design that is only used here: alternating red and white stripes, and barrel roofs with free-hanging lights, both laterally arranged in regards to the platform.

Ostbahnhof underground station is usually only served by the brown U5 line from Laimer Platz to Neuperlach Süd.
