Life's Little Moments

Butterfly steaks - yum!

Had a great outing with my nature group today - only eight hardy souls showed up but what we lacked in numbers we made up for in fun.  It was blazingly hot as the morning wore on, but that made for excellent bug action.  Lots of butterflies and dragons. But my choice today was easy since I love a good predation shot.

This is a male Eastern Pondhawk (a very common species) eating an American Copper Butterfly.  Yes, I know it's a bit creepy, but it's also nature.  Pondhawks are ferocious hunters and have even been known to eat their own species. Makes you glad we don't live in a prehistoric age where dragons were the size of cows, doesn't it?

Two other shots from today on Flicker, starting HERE with a wonderful big dragon and followed by an equally wonderful and big spider (with a mate and a meal).  Fun if you have a minute.

Temps are going to be on the unpleasant side all the way through the weekend. Not good for birds, but very good for insects, so consider yourself warned.

Thanks for stopping by.
