Tiny Dancer: the First Hummingbird of the Year!

It is always a heady moment, that time in late April or early May when I first hear the rush of tiny wings. It's like being buzzed by the largest bumblebee you've ever seen. Dexter and I were sitting on the front porch around 8:30 in the morning, catching a few rays, when I heard the first hummingbird arrive. She flew over my head and hovered there for a second; the cat's eyes grew large!

And then I smiled and I smiled and I smiled some more. I couldn't help it! I was so happy to see her, back again! And of course you know what I did after that: I spent part of my day, sitting in a chair in the backyard, watching the feeder, hoping to snag a few decent photos.

I did indeed get some pictures. And I realized in short order that the first visitor of the year is a female (the males have bright red throats), perhaps even our old friend Lady Greensleeves! I got a few photos where she was landing on the feeder, like the one above; she sure looked like a tiny dancer to me!

The soundtrack song is this one: Elton John, with Tiny Dancer.
