Taranto

This contribution to our journal of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal) is another that is representative rather than literally an image of the location in question*.

Winsford sent us this shot of a selection of movies by Quentin Tarantino for Taranto - thank you! The film director's surname derives from his family's origins in the city. Tarantino is also the name of the dialect spoken in Taranto.

Lorna writes about the Battle of Taranto in her war diary entry of 12th November 1940. Hear this entry performed by actor Bethany Ray, as she plays her great-great aunt in Episode 7 of our highly commended podcast series.

Do you think that you could help us finish our project by sending us shots for the places listed below? If so, please do get in touch with h.hall@napier.ac.uk. Remember that we do not necessarily need a shot of a place - a representation will do. You'll see that we have included some representation ideas against some of the places in our list.

Albania: Durrës (Durazzo)[1]
Egypt: Sidi Barrani[2]
Finland: Hanko (Hangö)[3]; Mannerheim Line
Germany: Heligoland[4]
Greece: Thermopylae[5]
Russia: Karelian Isthmus; Petsamo province (part of Finland until 1944); Vyborg (Viipuri in Finland until 1944)[6]

[1] There is a restaurant with this name in London N8.
[2]  Sidi Barrani is named on some World War II memorials. For example, a blipper in or near Lichfield could photograph this one for us. Please keep your eyes peeled the next time you pass a war memorial.
[3] Perhaps a Finnish blipper could help out with this location in the south of Finland?
[4] Also the name of a 2010 Massive Attack album - check the record collections of your friends and family!
[5] Are you in Paris? Are you going to Paris? Would you have time to pop into the Louvre to photograph Leonidas at Thermopylae by David for us?
[6] If you have access to a globe or a world map, this may be the best way for us to represent these two places. We very much doubt that any blippers will be planning trips here in the near future.

*Other examples of non-literal shots blipped in this journal so far represent:

Babylon: cinema brochure
Bailleul: book extract
Chad: a map brought back from the country as a tourist souvenir
Coventry: tour hoodie
Dakar: World Cup finals screen shots
Dunkirk: road sign to the town
Ilford: film
Mafeking: a street sign
River Marne: a painting
Romagna: guide book and train tickets
Silesia: film credit
